Compounded medications are not the same as a generic version. Generic versions of medications generally require the manufacturer to apply for FDA-approval by establishing that the generic is bio-equivalent to the brand name drug, like Wegovy®, Ozempic®, Mounjaro® or Zepbound™. Contrasting against brand name drugs, compounded medications are not FDA-approved and are compounded only pursuant to a specific prescription or if a drug is listed on the FDA’s shortage list by a compounding pharmacy with the right facility and environment to comply with applicable state and federal rules required prior to dispensing a compounded medication.
